The premier importer of specialty confections and fine foods in the US

Josef Manner got started in the confections business with this goal: “chocolate for everyone—high quality at an affordable price.” This goal proved itself to be a popular one and just 7 years after opening in 1897, the Manner factory in Vienna had 100 employees. Yet, it was not until 1898 that the classic Manner wafer bar came into existence. Originally, the bar was given the lackluster name of “Neapolitan Wafer no. 239.” The Neapolitan aspect came from the hazelnut cream, which featured hazelnuts from Vienna. At the time, the people of Vienna were very interested in Naples and the Mediterranean. Business continued to grow and in 1913 Manner became a public company. At this point the company changed its name from Josef Manner & Co to Josef Manner and Comp AG. The company purchased the newest machinery available at the time to help make the Manner factory as efficient as possible. This also allowed the company to become the number one confectionary brand in the Habsburg Monarchy, which controlled Austria-Hungary.

Manner History

Times became extremely difficult with the onset of World War I. Manner was able to sustain during the first few years because of a filled stock room, but had a hard time staying open from 1918 to 1919. After the war, things did not pick up from where they left off. The market dropped from 56 million people in the entire Habsburg Monarchy to 6 million people of the Austrian Republic. During this time, Manner suffered the effects of inflation and post-war economic crisis. Then, despite mass destruction throughout Europe, the Manner factory survived with little damage. After the Second World War, Manner was forced to “donate” the last of their reserves to Stalin. The effects of the two wars ultimately led to Manner’s rebirth in the 1940s. At this time, a lot of recipes were modernized and production began to increase again. By 1964, the record turnover had surpassed that which was reached at the end of 1914, which was the best business year Manner had previously had. In 1970, Manner merged with Napoli, Ragendorfer, & Co, which was the second largest confectionary company at the time. After this merger, Manner has continued to grow and is today a staple in Austrian life.
